Short-handed? The position assigner loses the same slots every time

Nine players turn up to a game that wants eleven. You paste the nine names into the position assigner, pick soccer, hit the button, and the card comes back with a keeper, a back four, a midfield four — and two empty slots where the forwards should be. You click again, hoping the gaps land somewhere less useless. Same two slots. Click a third time and it is still the wingers. That is not the shuffle being stubborn. It is the shuffle not touching the positions at all.

One list is shuffled, the other never moves

The Random Sports Position Assigner holds a fixed list of positions for each sport and a list of the players you typed. When you press the button it shuffles exactly one of those two lists — the players — using the same crypto-backed Fisher–Yates pass every picker on this site uses. The position list is then walked in its original order and handed the shuffled names one at a time: first position gets the first name off the shuffled pile, second position the second, and so on down the card.

That single design decision is the whole article. It means who plays where is genuinely random and re-rolls cleanly, which is the argument-ending property you came for. It also means that when the pile of names runs out before the list of positions does, the slots left standing are always the tail end of that fixed list — the same slots, in the same order, on every click, forever. Re-rolling moves the people around. It cannot move the hole.

The fill order, sport by sport

Because the order is fixed, you can know in advance exactly what a short turnout will cost you. Here is the order each sport is filled in, straight from the tool:

Soccer (11): GK, LB, LCB, RCB, RB, LM, LCM, RCM, RM, LW/F, RW/F. Back-to-front, so a short squad is stripped of attackers first. Ten players and you lose one wide forward; nine and you lose both, leaving a keeper, four defenders and four midfielders with literally nobody ahead of the ball.

Baseball (9): P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF. Infield first, then the outfield left to right. Eight players drops right field, seven drops centre and right, six leaves you with a battery and an infield and an entirely empty outfield. This one degrades the way most coaches would choose to degrade it anyway.

Volleyball (6): Setter, OH1, OH2, MB1, MB2, Opposite. Five players costs you the opposite, which is a reasonable trade; four costs a middle blocker too.

Basketball (5): PG, SG, SF, PF, C. Four players and the centre is the slot that vanishes — the tallest role on the card, dropped first.

Soccer is the outlier and it is worth internalising, because eleven-a-side is the format most likely to be short. Two sports degrade sensibly, one degrades into an all-defence formation, and the tool gives you no warning which you are getting.

"Bench" appears twice and means two different things

An unfilled slot is not left blank — it is printed with the placeholder — (bench) —. Separately, if you enter more players than the sport has positions, the extras are listed under the table on a line that starts with Bench:. Same word, opposite meanings. The placeholder means "no player exists for this position"; the bench line means "these players exist and have no position". You will never see both at once, since you cannot be simultaneously over and under the roster size, but reading a card quickly it is easy to see the word and assume somebody is standing there.

There is a sharper edge on the bench line. The table and the bench are both rendered into the result, but the copyable text version of the result is built only from the position rows — one POSITION: Name line each. Copy a lineup for a squad of fourteen into a group chat and the eleven starters travel; the three substitutes do not. If the subs matter, screenshot the card or retype them. That the bench is shuffled at all is the good news: the extras are just the tail of the same shuffled pile, so nobody is systematically stuck as the spare.

What to do when you are short

The tool only knows full-sided formats — 11, 9, 6 and 5. Youth soccer's 7v7 and 9v9, three-on-three basketball and coach-pitch variants are not options, so if you play one of those you are always in the short-handed case by definition, and the positions you lose are decided by a list that was never designed for your format.

Two practical moves. First, if the tail of the list is not the part you would choose to drop — the soccer case — assign against the smaller sport instead and translate. Five players in a small-sided game read perfectly well off the basketball card as "one at the back, two wide, two central" once you have agreed the mapping out loud. Second, if the number of players is fixed but the shape is up for debate, decide the shape first and only then use the assigner for the part it is actually good at: deciding which body goes in which slot.

Two smaller edges worth knowing. Duplicate names are not detected — two Alexes fill two positions and the card cannot tell you which is which, so use surnames or initials. And if the sport option is ever missing or unrecognised, the tool quietly falls back to soccer rather than erroring, which is one more reason to glance at the dropdown before you read the result.

What it deliberately does not decide

The assignment is a flat, uniform shuffle with no skill input whatsoever — that is stated plainly on the tool page and it is exactly what makes the result feel fair. The flip side is that the card is blind to everything a coach knows. If safety or the rules constrain a position, take it out of the tool's hands before you press the button; the case for locking specialist roles rather than drawing for them is made in full in our guide to randomising a batting order , and it applies just as much to a keeper as to a pitcher. If you want sides built around ability instead, that is the Team Balancer 's job, not this one's.

It also has no memory between clicks. Each press is an independent draw, so nothing stops the same player taking the same position three weeks running, and nothing tracks how long anyone has been on the bench. Used with that in mind it does one job very well. Paste the names, pick the sport, and let the position assigner take the blame for who is in goal this week. Just read the bottom of the card before you read the top — the empty slots are the one part of the result the shuffle never had a say in.
