よくある質問
Which sports and formations are included?
Soccer uses an 11-player 4-4-2 shape (keeper, back four, midfield four, two wide forwards), basketball the standard five, baseball all nine fielding positions, and volleyball a six-player lineup with setter, hitters, middle blockers, and opposite.
What happens when I have more players than positions?
The lineup is filled first and everyone left over is listed as the bench below the table, in random order too, so you can rotate substitutes in without accusations of favoritism.
What if I have fewer players than the sport needs?
Every player still receives a position, and unfilled slots are marked with a placeholder so you can see at a glance which positions are uncovered. For small turnouts, switching to basketball's five-player lineup often fits better.
Can it weight assignments by skill?
No. Assignments are a straight random shuffle with no skill input — that's what makes them argument-free. If you want sides balanced by ability, the Team Balancer on this site is built for that job instead.
How do I re-roll if someone objects?
Click Assign positions again. Every click performs a fresh unbiased shuffle of the whole roster, and earlier lineups remain in the History list in case you want to go back to one.

- Short-handed? The position assigner loses the same slots every time
The Random Sports Position Assigner shuffles your players, never the positions. So when eight kids show up for an eleven-a-side lineup, which slots come back empty is not random at all — and for soccer it means nobody up front. Here is the fill order for each sport and how to read a short lineup.
- Even playing time is a counting problem (do the math before you promise it)
Five on the field for four quarters is twenty slots. Twelve players cannot split twenty evenly, so 'everyone plays the same amount' is sometimes impossible before the whistle blows. Here is the slot arithmetic, how the rotation tool keeps the gap to a single period, and what it deliberately leaves to the coach.
- A random batting order for game day (and when to hand out positions too)
Writing the same lineup card every week is how a rec-league coach ends up in the parking lot explaining themselves. Here's how a random batting order works, what the position-assignment option actually does, and the one spot you should never leave to chance.
- Build balanced teams that don't turn into a blowout
A purely random split can dump all your strongest players on one side. Here's how a balanced team generator spreads people evenly by skill, level, or any tag you choose — so the teams are fair and the game stays close.
- Fair lineups and honest playing time: a coach's guide to randomizing
Parents notice everything: who bats third, who sits the most, who always plays the easy position. Here's how to use random lineups and rotation tools to make playing time provably fair — and when not to.
